A Sweet Story:
Did you know Honey was used as an important sweetener in food and drinks and medicines in ancient societies. Honeybees were highly venerated and partially domesticated in the Egyptian Empire. Now modern Olympic athletes eat and drink honey supplements to allow them bursts of dynamic action.
Honey used to be given as gifts at weddings to be taken each day as a tonic, for a lunar month. We got honeymoon. The first sex stimulant.
Floral nectars are gathered by bees in the last half of their life (45 days). They suck the nectar into the honey sac (2nd stomach) from the target flowering plant, which can turn its nectar on and off. This allows the whole forest of that tree to get a fair share of the pollinating bees. Nectar is passed from bee to bee, enzymatically changed and dehydrated and becomes Honey.
When a forest is blooming and a honey flow is happening. Bees get excited and collect nectar as fast as possible, which can be smelt at the hive as water is driven off it. Once it reaches a certain dehydrated level it can be stored for an indefinite time in the prepared hexagonal wax cells which are packed and sealed with a wax lid. Prior to sealing, certain anti viral, anti fungal and antioxidants are put into the top of the cell to preserve the future bee food.
These last additives heighten the medicinal quality of honey for which the Roman army used as wound balms and salve’s. These vital ingredients can be destroyed or withdrawn from honey in modern industrial processing, depriving the customer of the great benefits.
However raw honey from farmers and apiarist’s still contain these ingredients. The very best way to get this tonic is to eat a little comb honey each day on toast, in hot water with lime or on porridge. Don’t worry about the cell wax as it is also good for you.
Did you also know that it takes the bees 3kg of honey to make 1kg of beeswax so is used most economically in the bees hive strucure. |
